Every Woodlander a critical and discerning reader who effectively communicates in the English Language.
Key approaches

As Woodlanders come from different backgrounds with different levels of language skills, the following is designed to ensure all Woodlanders can develop necessary literacy skills for life:

  • Incorporating Discovery, Dialogue and Discerning phases in our EL curriculum 
    • Discovery phase: students are exposed to a wide range of themes with a variety of multi-modal texts. This allows students to delve deep into each theme, gathering a variety of viewpoints and perspectives.
    • Dialogue phase: students are encouraged to be engaged in a discourse with their classmates to listen to different and alternative perspectives, inquire further into the themes, and think critically to arrive at their own stands.
    • Discerning phase: students will then articulate their stand with clarity and precision, having a systematic way of expressing their thoughts, via verbal and non-verbal forms, with empathy and a sense of purpose.
  • Designing a differentiated reading programme
    • A culture of reading is essential to build basic literacy skills, which is the foundation for all learning
    • Our reading programme provides articles for various levels of readability to ensure that all Woodlands have access to reading material, and eventually developing a habit of reading
Key Programmes
English Oral Communication Enrichment and Competitions

Secondary 1: Students will go through a choral reading and storytelling enrichment to hone their skills in expression, tone and purpose. This is also practised in the internal choral reading and storytelling competitions, and the ‘Reading Aloud’ component in the oral examination.

Secondary 2: Students will go through a S.T.A.R (Speedy Thinking, Agile Reaction) Communication programme to facilitate the generation of ideas in impromptu situations, and to communicate these ideas effectively. This is also practised in the ‘Spoken Interaction’ component in the oral examination.

Secondary 3: Students will go through a public speaking communication programme to develop their confidence, coherence and clarity in articulating their thoughts and ideas. This is further practised in a public speaking showcase, and in the opportunities for public speaking in school and community events, and morning assembly.

Differentiated Reading Programme

We designed a differentiated reading programme that caters to students of different levels of readability. We hope that students will access appropriate reading material, discover the value of reading, and develop a reading habit for life.

Students will be provided with different magazines of various levels, and certain selected articles will be used during lessons for discussions and reading activities. Graduating students will be provided with curated articles and good essays for them to gain good ideas for their writing and to revise for their national examinations.

Internal Writing Competitions

Students will be exposed to various types of writing, and realise that different types of writing involve different skills. We have organised various internal and registered for external competitions, for example, short stories, poetry writing, and script writing, to further stretch students to be effective and stylistic in their writing.
